The Washington School Generals started out blistering Tuesday night and then put the Manchester Academy Mavericks away for good in the fourth quarter.
In their 49-32 home victory, the General boys (5-2) started the game on a 14-0 run which was bookended by a slam dunk by Derion Dillard and a 3-point basket by Lathan Powell.
From there, the Generals kept the lead the entire game, holding off a Maverick rally in the second half.
“I was pleased with the early intensity we had defensively to start the game and jumped out on them and created some easy baskets off the defense. Then after getting a lead, I felt like we relaxed which we have to learn to keep our foot on the gas,” Washington School Coach David Rounsavall said.
Senior Luke McPherson led Washington School with 10 points. Dillard scored 13.
A big 3-point basket by McPherson helped give the Generals a 38-27 lead at the end of the third quarter and a bucket by Prentiss Doolittle extended the margin to 40-27 in the opening stages of the fourth quarter.
“We came out in the second half and eventually put them away so I was proud of the overall effort and getting our first conference win of the season. I credit Manchester. They started hitting several threes to stay in the game.”
Washington School’s next game is Thursday at Greenville Christian School. It will be the first meeting of the two schools in basketball in recent memory.
