Greenville High School girls basketball coach Dakedreon Lampkin isn’t looking too far ahead. He definitely likes what he sees, so far, but right now he is just taking it one practice and one game at a time.
Lampkin’s Honeybees pushed their record to 3-1 on Tuesday night with a convincing 51-22 home victory over Humphreys County.
Greenville blazed out to a strong start in the victory, which gave Humphreys County its first loss of the season. The Honeybees led 17-5 at the end of the first quarter and 23-12 at the half.
“I can see us getting better day by day and week by week,” Coach Lampkin said. “I am starting to see some potential now. We beat a team that was undefeated coming in, and that is something. I am just focused on us, and we will just worry about us.”
Greenville is scheduled to travel to Coahoma County High School on Friday. The Honeybees will play at rival O’Bannon on Saturday.
In Tuesday’s victory, it was Honeybee newcomer Tialone Banks who led the way. Banks, a senior transfer from Leland, scored a team-high 27 points on 11 of 22 shooting. Banks also registered a team-high nine rebounds and three steals.
Said Coach Lampkin, “The thing I like about Tialone is she has a high motor. You never have to ask her to pick up the speed. She is fast, but she is under control at the same time.”
Banks said she is pleased with her start with her new team. Banks has scored in double digits in all four games this season, including a 24-point night against Amanda Elzy and a 17-point game against Murrah.
“I think the chemistry on this team has grown, and the team is getting better everyday,” she said. “We are learning how to play together everyday, and I think we can a championship.”
Junior A’Niya Miller scored nine points for Greenville, while also grabbing six rebounds and four steals.
Sierra Liggins scored six points, had seven rebounds and five assists.
