The St. Joseph Catholic School football team took down an old rival in convincing fashion Friday night as the host Fighting Irish defeated Indianola Academy 46-13.
On the game’s opening kickoff, St. Joseph’s Chris Mayfield recovered a Colonel fumble to set up the game’s first score, which was rushed in by Kye Nelson’s from five yards out to put the Irish (2-1) up 8-0. Later in the game, Mayfield would return an interception for a touchdown.
After the opening score, the first quarter was interrupted by an hour-long lighting delay, but when the Irish came back on the field they picked up right where they left off. A touchdown run by quarterback CJ Moore gave the Irish a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the Irish took a 34-0 lead into halftime.
St. Joseph backup quarterback Victor Baker threw a TD pass to Christian Foster for a 30-yard score. It was Foster’s second touchdown catch of the game.
“We had a few holding penalties that we need to clean up, but overall I thought we played a pretty good game,” St. Joseph head football coach John Baker said. “We have guys who are capable of scoring at anytime, which means we have a chance to do something this season.”
Coach Baker said the victory was a good confidence boost for his squad after the Irish lost on the road at Jackson Prep last Friday.
“Our game next week on the road against Carroll Academy will give us a really good gauge to see where we are at,” Coach Baker said.
Indianola Academy fell to 1-3 with the loss.
