Daniel Signa, William McGee and Wade Fratesi are the three captains of the Washington School soccer team, and head coach Jeffrey Giachelli said their leadership has been instrumental all season long.
On Thursday night in the Quarterfinals of the Division III Boys Soccer Playoff, the trio’s leadership was again on full display as they blanked visiting Laurel Christian 7-0.
The Generals advance to the state semifinals where they will host St. Augustine on Monday.
“We’ve got some good leadership with those three captains,” Coach Giachelli said. “We have the right team and the right mindset. The players have bought into what we are trying to do.”
Fratesi, an outside fullback, said the seniors on the team have led by example.
“We set the tone by our work ethic. At the beginning of the year, we said, ‘We are not here to play around. This is big boy soccer’. The younger players have come in and know they need to do their job to help the team win.”
McGee, an attacking midfielder, said it’s great chemistry that has carried the Generals this far.
“I think we played great and moved the ball exactly how we have been doing the whole season. We have a lot of chemistry and we have all played together for years and years.”
Added Signa, “We are very good at communicating and we know each other so well.”
On Thursday, the Generals spread the success around: William McGee scored two goals and had an assist. George Walker, Reid Henderson, Miller Ogelsby and Cedric Dove scored a goal. Prentiss Doolittle had a goal and as assist. Lathan Powell had an assist.
