The Greenville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. hosted an International Awareness Day event on April 13 at 631 Nelson St.
The Greenville Alumnae Chapter wanted to promoted a sense of sisterhood and educated their chapter on the foods and culture of the Kenyan Community via an International Potluck.
All members were encouraged to prepare an African dish and dress in African attire. The chairperson informed the sorors about Kenya that included statistics on its educational system, economy, tradition and culture. The ladies shared the delicious meal with citizens in the area of the sorority's house while explaining the foods.
Netty R. Seard, chapter president, explained the reason for the event.
“International awareness and involvement is one of the sorority’s five point programmatic thrust, said Seard. “Each year the sorority selects a country to highlight and focus on the background and to better understand other countries.”
Jannis Williams, chairperson for the committee, was excited about the turnout of the event.
“As the chairperson of the International Awareness and Involvement committee, it was our goal to highlight the traditions and cultures of Kenya, Africa,” Williams said. “This is a yearly project. The project itself presented us with the opportunity to fellowship with sorority members and to further promote a sense of sisterhood. The event was successful and members dressed in African attire and brought homemade African cuisines.”
The Greenville (MS) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered Jan. 26, 1980. Since that time, the chapter has embraced the principles of our sisterhood by providing continuous community service through its many problems, projects and activities. Each year, the chapter embarks on a full calendar of activities that encompass the sorority’s Five Point Programmatic Thrusts.
