The Washington County Board of Supervisors voted to aid the City of Greenville in its effort to make improvements to a heavily utilized intersection.
Per Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons’ request via a letter submitted to BOS president Carl McGee, the board approved authorization for Washington County to use its equipment to assist the city with the resurfacing of a portion of the intersection of Highway 1 and VFW Road.
According to the submitted letter, the City of Greenville will purchase and haul the asphalt to the site, and the county workers will spread the material, utilizing county equipment.
In addition, city employees will “prep” the site prior to the spreading of the asphalt.
The overall consensus of the board was that the intersection certainly needs the resurfacing done.
“Since we’re doing the work, we’ll need permission from the state to be on their highway,” McGee pointed out.
Simmons said he signed an invoice to purchase the asphalt roughly three months ago with the intention of repairing the intersection due to the number of complaints from local residents.
“Dating back about a year, we asked former Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) chief engineer Kevin Magee whether or not that project could be added to the MDOT list. They considered it, but did not have the funds to do so,” Simmons explained.
Continuing, Simmons said, “So, we (the office of the mayor) begin to creatively look at ways we can get this done and one of those ways was to address this as a one of the joint city and county projects.”
Simmons added the city will be responsible for painting the lines as well after they have been granted the necessary approval from MDOT.
“This is yet another city and county project to help repair and repave roads and bridges in the city of Greenville and Washington County,” he said.
