Local authorities are investigating a weekend house fire that left one local man dead.
At about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the Greenville Fire Department and the Greenville Police Department were dispatched to a house fire at 517 E. Moore St.
Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters found a male body inside the home.
“Upon arrival, the fire department was able to extinguish the fire and in doing so located a subject inside,” Merchant said, noting the Washington County Coroner pronounced the person deceased on scene.
Merchant said the body has been sent to the state crime lab and the cause of death will be released pending the autopsy.
Based on information found at the scene, including the victim’s car being taken, Merchant said officers are investigating the incident as a homicide.
The stolen car has been found but no arrests have been made at this time, Merchant said.
“This is an active investigation,” Merchant said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Greenville Police Department at 662-378-1515 or Crimestoppers at 662-378-8477.
