The gates at Greenville Cemetery have once again been the victim of a driver losing control of his vehicle.
A late-model white Mustang GT slammed into the south side of the gates, destroying one of the pillars at about 2:05 a.m. June 23.
The police report from the Greenville Police Department says the driver of the vehicle, Clay Harrison, of Greenville, lost control of the vehicle before rammed into the gates.
The gate as of Thursday afternoon still laid in pieces on the ground and parts of the car were still in the rubble.
It’s not the first time the gates have been destroyed, but it is the first time in many years the offending vehicle was left at the site of the accident.
“It’s the first time we’ve known what’s happened,” said Warren Harper, superintendent of the Greenville Cemetery Association. “In 2014, we replaced the north side and never knew who hit it.”
Harper said the south entrance has been replaced as well in his time with cemetery association.
The original cemetery was constructed in 1878 and the gates were later built.
Harper said he believes the gates to be from the early 1900s. The decorative part of the gate is built of concrete.
The association is now waiting on insurance filings before proceeding with reconstruction of the structure.
