Some of Washington County’s dilapidated streets are soon to receive some much needed maintenance work.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors this week met with various local officials who are responsible for the safe and successful day-to-day operations in Washington County.
Director of the Emergency Management Division David Burford at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting spoke in detail about various projects set to get underway, including repairs to North Theobald Street, North Broadway and the Greenville Airport Road.
All projects have been approved at this point, Burford said, noting they are now awaiting contract finalizations.
Burford also informed the board of pre-application approval for the Hazard Mitigation Grant.
According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, mitigation is the ongoing effort to lessen the impact disasters have on people’s lives and property through damage prevention and flood insurance.
To qualify for mitigation grants, state and local governments are acquired to develop and implement hazard mitigation plans and Burford said the emergency management division is in the process of completing the application now.
The Washington County Convention Center is the county’s main disaster shelter and is in need of a new generator. The county administrator office is also in need of a generator.
“The cost for those two generators is roughly $375,000,” Burford said, noting the grant will pay for 75% of the total cost and the other 25% will be paid by the county.
Another motion that was approved was repairs and improvements to Rayner Road near the impending Tru by Hilton hotel, which is anticipated to open before the end of the month.
County Road Department Manager, Arthur Perry estimates that the Darlove Bridge will be ready for use again in three weeks.
