An early morning fire that could have destroyed an entire strip of store spaces was quickly extinguished thanks to local firefighters.
Greenville Fire Chief Ruben Brown said the Greenville Fire Department received a call of a commercial fire at the Delta Plaza Shopping Center off of Highway 1, which housed only one operational business, at about 6:25 a.m. Wednedsay morning.
Six fire units responded to the call, including two ladder trucks and four other fire engine companies, along with the main staff.
“Once on scene, the first unit reported that the building was fully engulfed with heavy flames and smoke. At that point, we started attacking the fire,” Brown said.
Brown said it took about 12-15 minutes to bring the fire under control and the flames were extinguished shortly after.
Brown said the area where the fire started appeared to be a vacant structure, based on the point of origin.
The state fire marshal’s office along with the Greenville Fire Department is currently investigating the incident to determine what caused the fire.
Brown said he isn’t sure if those two other businesses — the Riverbell Lanes bowling alley and the Sports Parlor, adjacent to the fire site, were occupied at the time. The bowling alley, he said, hasn’t been operational for some time.
“The guys made a really good stop because the fire could have spread from one end all the way down to the Parlor,” he said. “They did a really good job of cutting it off and extinguishing it pretty much where it started at.”
