Local youth will soon have the chance to learn about Native American crafts at the Greenville Arts Council.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, the Greenville Arts Council (GAC) will host Native American Crafts for Children with Winterville Mounds.
Eleanor Wright, executive director for the GAC, decided to organize the event along with the experienced staff from Winterville Mounds in an effort to engage children in craft making in the tradition of Native American culture.
Office coordinator for the GAC, Sandra Stillman, said it is the first time the GAC has put together an event of this kind.
“They’ve agreed to come and spend a couple of hours that Saturday morning with the children to show them and demonstrate traditional Native American art and get the kids involved in making things,” Stillman said.
Stillman said in good humor one good reason for parents to register their children is because it gives them a couple hours’ break, but it also gives the kids a chance to interact with each other.
“It’s great exposure to a different culture and it’s a culture that is pretty significant to Delta history,” she said.
Any creations or pieces the children make will go home with them and Stillman said those projects can be something for the children to brag about and parents admire.
Native American Crafts is for children ages 6 to 12 and is free. The event will wrap up at noon.
Stillman added if they have a good response to the event, the GAC will likely host another.
Because there is a limit of 15, reservations are encouraged and parents can call the GAC at 662-332-2246 to register their child.
The GAC is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and should there not be anyone available to answer, the GAC will respond to any recorded messages.
