The Western Line School District, which includes O’Bannon High School and Riverside High School, canceled the football and volleyball seasons on Thursday night.
Western Line now becomes the second public school district in Washington County to cancel its fall sports season due to concerns over the coronavirus. Two weeks ago, the Greenville Public School District canceled its fall sports season.
The Leland School District and the Hollandale School District have not yet made a decision whether to cancel fall sports, but decisions from both school districts are expected within the next week.
On July 14, the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) executive committee decided to delay their fall 2020 sports season by two weeks during a meeting. Football practice is set to start on Aug. 17, scrimmages on Aug. 28, and games Sept. 4.
This decision was made in hopes that the two extra weeks will allow more time to adjust to being back in a school setting in the time of COVID-19.
Volleyball and soccer teams in the MHSAA can begin practicing Aug. 10, and begin games Aug. 2.
