ARCOLA — The outcome of the game was over early in Deer Creek’s 51-33 home victory over North Sunflower Academy Thursday night.
The Warriors, behind strong plays by players like Noah and Ethan Allegrezza, Hunter Sims and Steen Buchanan, raced out to 29-11 lead at the end of the first half. Deer Creek kept its comfortable lead for the entire second half to improve their record to 4-3 this season.
Yet, despite such a commanding performance, Deer Creek coach Benny McLendon said he was not overly thrilled with his team’s play after the game.
Deer Creek’s victory Thursday night, the second of the season over North Sunflower, was the last game the Warriors are scheduled to play in 2010. Deer Creek’s next game is set for January 7 at Sharkey Issaquenna.
McLendon said his team still has a lot of work to do if it hopes to make a deep run in the MAIS state playoffs this season.
“We did not block out good on defense, and we made a lot of poor decisions,” McLendon said. “We are going to spend a lot of our time going back to the fundamentals. We need to start making better passes and hitting open shots.”
Buchanan, a sophomore, led Deer Creek with 12 points in the game. Sims scored 10 points. Satterfield and Ethan Allegrezza scored eight points. Judd Cooper scored six points. Noah Allegrezza scored five points, and Austin Rexrode scored two points.
Deer Creek girls 50, North Sunflower 16
Sophomore Caylee Franks led the Deer Creek girls basketball team with 14 points as the Lady Warriors dominated North Sunflower in all aspects of the game.
Senior Swayze Hollingsworth scored 11 points for the Lady Warriors, and Marlee Furr and Hailey Gilbert both scored 10 points.
Deer Creek School coach Hunter McIntire, in his first season leading the Lady Warriors, said the win was another positive sign of his team’s development.
“We are starting to play better, and we are getting a lot better in our transitional play,” Coach McIntire said.
“The girls are very competitive and want to work hard to get better.”
