YAZOO CITY— The Greenville Christian School girls basketball team jumped out to an early lead over rival St. Joseph Catholic School and never looked back Thursday night in their 72-40 victory in the semifinals of the Class AA District-4 tournament at Benton Academy.
GCS led 28-5 after the first quarter and 50-15 at halftime.
“We put a lot of pressure on their offense, and we shot the ball well,” Greenville Christian coach Brother Sandifer said.
The Lady Saints (18-6) will play Manchester Academy in the championship game of the tournament Saturday at 4:30 p.m. GSC and Manchester have split the two games they played this season, which each game coming down to the last position.
The Lady Irish will play Benton in the third place game Saturday at 2 p.m.
GCS’s Tariyah Washington scored 24 points to lead her team Thursday. Williette Kingdom had 15 and both Taylor Ellis and Jordyn Claiborne added 12 points each.
St. Joe’s Ashanti Brown led her team with 13 points. Cha’Koreia Holmes scored 12.
Thursday’s victory for the Lady Saints was payback of sorts after Irish defeated Greenville Christian in a thrilling overtime game back on Jan. 14.
“I guess that did sort of motivate us, but we also looked at the film, and the players saw how they could improve,” Coach Sandifer said.
Next week, starting Monday, GCS will host the AA South State tournament with games each night thru Saturday
