Mike Mohead just started playing quarterback three weeks ago, but the way he has been playing he appears more like a seasoned veteran.
Mohead, a senior on the Greenville Christian School football team, helped the Saints pick up their first win of the season last Friday in a 25-12 home victory over Tunica Academy. Not only did Mohead slash and dash for crucial rushing yards in the game, but he also threw two big touchdown passes to receiver Lawson Stokes.
“Mike is doing great this season,” Greenville Christian coach Jon Reed McLendon said. “He is playing with so much confidence, and he is making a lot of big plays for us. Mike has the ability to break away for a game-changing play at any minute.”
Mohead said he is happy to be playing well, but even happier that his team was able to get its first victory. Each week, he said, he learning more about what it takes to play quarterback.
“Not everybody can play quarterback,” Mohead said. “You have to be mentally tough, and you have to be willing to learn. As the quarterback, it is my job to lead the team, and I have to set the example for my teammates.”
After picking up their first victory last Friday, both Mohead and Coach McLendon said they expect to be able to win many more games before the season is over. This Friday the Saints travel to Jackson to take on Hillcrest Christian.
“Even though we lost some early games, we have felt confident since the summertime,” Coach McLendon said. “We are going to take it one game at a time, but we believe we have the ability to win every game on the schedule.”
Along with Mohead and Lawson’s big plays, other highlights in Friday’s win for the Saints included an interception return for a touchdown by Antonio Moore and a rushing TD by sophomore Marlon Palmer.
“We still believe we have what it takes to go all the way,” Mohead said. “We believe we can do it, and that is the first step.”
